I used to have very long hair that when straightened, went down to my knees. A year ago, I decided that I was tired of it and chopped it all off. Two months ago I decided to cut it into a short bob. It’s a bit longer now, about shoulder length, but I don’t think I ever want to grow it out again.

I was hoping that this could be posted to let fat folks in Los Angeles know about a prospective meet up that will happen in August.

Along with a few other folks, I’m working on setting up a meet up for fat people in the Los Angeles are to meet one another and create a network of cool fat people. As we develop this space, we have a facebook group that people can join to stay up to date on work made towards the meet up and just generally post things their feeling in relation to fatness as it intersects with other identities. I've been thinking about getting my hair cut short for /years/ and have always put it off and worried as I am a big girl and I thought it would make me look like a tiny head or something ridiculous. This week on Heartbeats: Jackie and Berlin! <3

Even though Jackie and me grew up in the same city, I became aware of her awesomeness on the internet after we both had moved away (thank u, tumblr). She has definitely been an inspiration for me as a fat woman of colour navigating whiteness and fat phobia, not just through solidarity, but also because she is unapologetically who she is which has been my biggest struggle, hence this blog project. Jackie is also a co-founder of It Gets Fatter, “a body positivity project started by fat queer people of colour, for fat people of colour!” I would highly recommend checking out their videos on Vimeo.

Joining Jackie on this crush-worthy post is her boyfriend, Berlin Reed. He is a chef who just published a really great book called The Ethical Butcher: How Thoughtful Eating Can Change Your World (it’s on Amazon if you can’t access a local shop.) His bio describes him as “a food warrior and radical food theorist bent on decolonizing cuisine.” SWOON. Catch him on tour right now!

On a very personal note: I can’t even tell you how special it was to photograph these two. I have never witnessed brown love like this, queer brown love. The experience made me want to keep searching for brown bodies to project out into the world. This is how we heal.

I just wanted to say that, even though I don't have short hair (yet!), this blog has definitely helped me in feeling better about my body. It's an uphill battle, with a lot of years of shitty self-esteem to make up for, but between this blog, a fantastic body-positive community and a fantastic fiance, I feel like I'm finally learning to get a foothold. Well, I’m not going to talk anyone into anything, y’know? If you want to go short and think it’ll make you feel good, do it!

Body image stuff is hard, and a new haircut won’t magically make you love your body. So if your worries and negative feelings about cutting it outweigh the excitement, then maybe you want to wait. Or not. Basically: hair grows, play with it, and don’t listen to your talking fat (even if it’s this lil cutie).

I'm really scared about getting my hair cut short. But I REALLY want to do it. My dad's totally against it since he hates short hair but I really want a cute pixie cut. Right now I have a half cut, so half of my hair is short already... But I think this blog gave me the inspiration to do it :) Hopefully I don't bail out last minute. Thank youuu <33

I’ve thought about getting my hair cut short for a while. I finally decided to do it, thanks in part to this blog, and of course everyone said I shouldn’t. (Everyone but my girlfriend who has been super supportive <3) But guess what? I’ve gotten so many compliments, and most importantly: I love it! Thank you girls! (p.s. I hope I did this right!)

I’ve been following you guys for about a month, always coming back to look at the cute chicks around here with their awesome hairstyles. You guys finally helped me decide to cut it and I went in stages, from my original 33 inches hip-length to 28 inches on 4/16 and to 22 inches on 5/3. Today I just said “fuck it.” At the beginning of April, I had been a long-haired girl since about the age of four. My mom said I hadn’t been this length since I was about two.
